Design for Manufacture stage two winners announced

Persimmon and PRP Architects, creators of the Summit House lauded by deputy prime minister John Prescott, have not made it through to the second stage of the government’s Design for Manufacture competition. Nine consortia have won through to stage three of the competition where they will bid for the right to build on one or more of ten English Partnership (EP) sites. Seven, including the Persimmon-led entrant, received a commendation. EP director of corporate strategy Trevor Beattie said: “The product was a very different one for the competition than for the summit house. EP will be interested in looking at the commended bidders in other sites. Though this will depend on how they respond to the site briefs.” On announcing the winners deputy prime minister John Prescott said: “I hope this will stimulate more people to go to local authorities with ideas for affordable housing.” He added: “Everyone thinks the house price average is too high. The market can’t produce a house at £60,000 unless it has this type of arrangement.” Prescott said he “agreed” that the creation of 1000 homes across the 10 EP sites as part of the competition was “not enough” to change the market but he …
