Goldfish to the rescue

Goldfish could soon be coming to the rescue of Britain's flood-threatened housing sites. <p></p><p>Researchers at Edinburgh University believe that man-made ponds and lakes are the solution as they hold stormwater run-off and then allow it to slowly filter back into the ground. These need to be kept clean and that is where the goldfish come in, said Dr Miklas Scholz, a civil engineering researcher at Edinburgh University. Plans are being drawn up to include goldfish-inhabited ponds and lakes at a housing estate in Ruchill, Glasgow. </p><p>&amp;• See pages 25-26 for Thames Gateway flood risk analysis.</p>
