Govt to create Greater Cambridge Development Corporation

The government is establishing a new Development Corporation for Greater Cambridge despite opposition to the plans as revealed in a consultation.

The consultation on the new regeneration body, set to deliver “thousands of new homes, jobs and long overdue transport links in Greater Cambridge”, revealed “mixed responses” to the move, with 68% of individual respondents opposed or mostly opposed and 48% of local government organisations registering the same. This was from a total of 773 respondents.

Meanwhile, only 8% of private sector organisations were either opposed or mostly opposed to the introduction of the Corporation.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said that, working in partnership with local leaders and communities, the Development Corporation would deliver transport and services alongside new homes, “not as an afterthought”.

This is in addition to the £800 million the government has committed to “kickstarting” development around Cambridge and Oxford, to, MHCLG said, increase the supply of affordable homes, upgrade transport links and provide more green spaces for residents.
