Housebuilders meeting land use challenge

Latest government figures show that the housebuilding industry is meeting the challenge of increased densities and brownfield use. Figures released today show that 70% of new dwellings were built on previously developed land, including conversions. This compares with 67% in 2002 and 2003. London had the highest proportion with a figure of 94%, most of the regions were above 60% with only the South West and East Midlands below 60%. Average densities were also up to 40 dwellings per hectare, compared to 34 dwellings per hectare in 2003. Densities increased in all regions except Yorkshire and the Humber where they were unchanged. They reached 32 dwellings per hectare in all regions, before 2002 all except London were below 30 dwellings per hectare.
