Industry moves to tackle training crisis

<b></b>Housebuilders are training just 10% of the amount of new recruits needed by the industry over the next five years. Construction Industry Training Board figures reveal that 76,000 new recruits are needed each year for the whole industry. As housebuilding makes up 36% of construction by output, its training share stands at 27,000 new recruits annually. CITB says housebuilding is currently training just 2,700. But the industry has recognised the problem and many housebuilders are now actively supporting recruitment initiatives - such as National Construction Week - and launching their own training programmes.<br> Persimmon has launched a careers manual to encourage students to come into apprenticeships, Lovell has invested in craft academies and Laing has a training centre in east London. Other firms such as Redrow, Westbury and Gleeson have initiatives aimed at recruiting at site and management level. Persimmon chief executive John White said: &amp;“Not enough is being done to encourage youngsters to come in to apprenticeships. Many parents remember the industry as it was some years ago when there were not the same health and safety and welfare standards.
