June sees small bounce in housing market

House prices rebounded slightly in June after four months of sharp falls. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors said that 42% more of its members reported a fall in house prices in their region than a rise in June. That was an improvement on May when 46% more members reported a fall in prices. Its survey also showed a slowdown in the number of properties coming up for sale, suggesting that house prices might rise soon. Milan Khatri, head of economics at RICS, said that the signs of a falling market were not yet a cause for alarm. “To the extent that it has only been at these levels for three or four months I don’t think it’s that worrying,” he said. “It is a fairly subdued market overall.” The survey also showed the number of enquiries had risen in June with the possible imminent cut in interest rates giving buyers more confidence.
