Lord Rogers slams "poorly designed" new homes

The Urban Task Force, headed by Lord Richard Rogers, has slammed new developments as “poorly designed with public realm and buildings of a very low quality.” The comments came in the task force’s report Towards a Strong Urban Renaissance. The report recommended inviting “developers to bid for individual sites on the basis of a design proposal, not just a financial offer.” It welcomed the rise in density to 40 dwellings per hectare and the rise in the share of development on brownfield land to 70%. But it warned that cities were failing to retain a diverse community because working families were moving away in search of better schools and less congestion.
