New prefab factory

The prefabrication agenda has taken another step forward with Vanguard Modular Building Systems` announcement that it plans to build a factory in Cambridgeshire to produce 3,000 housing units a year. The siting of the facility is yet to be finalised, but plans are underway for it to be completed by the end of 2006. <p></p><p>Vanguard is investing £18 million in the project and is in talks with Cambridgeshire council to provide 70 homes for a demonstration project near Cambridge. The scheme will be entered into the government's Design for Manufacture £60,000 house competition. Persimmon, Fusion Building Systems and PRP Architects have also announced plans to enter the competition with a steel frame home design, which will be built at Persimmon's MMC project in Irlam, Greater Manchester.</p>
