New regs proposal on broadband access

Is the way we build houses making it difficult to install broadband in existing premises? If so, could better construction methods help remove any potential barrier to take-up on electronic communications? The government is asking these questions of the industry in a new consultation package from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister which seeks the best way to ensure cable ducting is installed in all new buildings.<p></p><p> The consultation is looking for views on options ranging from production of best practice guidance to toughening up Building Regulations to ensure new and altered buildings are constructed with ducting to make the installation and removal of cables easier. New Building Regs - in the form of a new Part Q - could cost an extra &amp;£460 per house. </p><p> Chris Leslie, minister responsible for Building Regulations, said that the government wants to make the UK a leader in e-commerce and internet use but that this would not be done at the expense of business: &amp;“To proceed with new Building Regulations, we need solid evidence of the benefits of such a change.
