Q:Can I rely entirely on the result of a Coal Authority Search to determine the exact location and condition of a mine?

No. The Coal Authority can only report on the information it holds. Their database is compiled by information supplied by others and whilst this information is checked by the Coal Authority, they cannot guarantee the accuracy of the source information nor that what is shown on an abandonment plan actually exists in that form. The quality and the age of the information supplied to them varies greatly and many unrecorded mine workings are known to exist.<p></p><p>If your Coal Authority search reveals a mine entry, you cannot assume the reported position of that mine entry to be precise. The Coal Authority employs qualified mining surveyors to interpret the information but they will have to make assumptions in providing you with the search results, particularly in relation to the depth or date of coal workings, the number and inclination of coal seams worked and the names of those coal seams.</p><p>In such a case you may wish to employ an experienced mine surveyor or mining/structural engineer who can advise whether any further surveys or investigations should be made to determine the exact location and condition of the mine entry.</p><p></p>
