Second homes becoming a far off dream for most

People are having to wait longer to fulfil their housing aspirations a survey by estate agent Savills has revealed. Of the almost 300,000 second home owners in England 30% are in the 55-64 age group. Just 12% are aged between 35 and 44. London accounts for nearly 20% of the second homes market in England. The majority are in the City, Kensington, Chelsea or Westminster. Richard Donnell, head of residential research at Savills said: “Younger people tend to be doing all they can to get the kids through school and stay on the housing ladder where they are, and are not even thinking about buying a second home.” Donnell says there are two types of second homeowner. The first represents the holiday homes market where the property is generally bought for weekend or longer breaks, the second group are generally commuters looking for a city base. (Telegraph)
