Six mayors awarded £7bn of Social and Affordable Homes programme

Six mayors outside London will have control of £7 billion of the government’s Social and Affordable Homes programme, the government has announced, with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) also publishing further details of the £39 billion investment into affordable housing.

The Established Mayoral Strategic Authorities of Greater Manchester, West Midlands, the North East, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region and South Yorkshire will, “for the first time”, work with Homes England to shape how they use their share of the funding for social and affordable homes in their regions, MHCLG said.

They are set to devise plans for the types of homes that are delivered, prioritised sites and how many suitable bids for grant funding could come forward in each area.

As part of this, MHCLG said housing providers would need to demonstrate how their bids sit with local priorities, “accelerating delivery of homes that genuinely meet local needs, ranging from specialist housing for older people to community-led projects”.

The indicative spend for the Established Mayoral Strategic Authorities, subject to suitable bids, include:

  • Greater Manchester: £1.8 billion
  • West Midlands: £1.7 billion
  • North East: £1.1 billion
  • West Yorkshire: £1 billion
