HBF Conference focuses on delivery, diversity and quality

Ben Roskrow reports from the HBF Policy conference where there were pleas to tone down criticism of the industry matched with an acceptance that much could be done to improve the reputation of the sector

“The best of times, the worst of times” – that Dickensian quote from A tale of two cities was how HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley summed up the housebuilding industry at this year’s HBF Policy conference in London on March 21st.

And indeed the conference - chaired by Natalie Elphicke, ceo of the Housing and Finance Institute - reflected this with speakers giving a mixture of views on the challenges ahead and the opportunities that abound.

Baseley himself ran though a plethora of issues facing the industry and how HBF was addressing them – including those of skills, quality, the Letwin review, diversity, leasehold, SMEs and the planning system. But he was keen to send a message to the government – that the industry is stepping up to the plate to deliver the new homes the country …
