December date for SE density directive

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott&amp;’s plan to intervene in housing schemes which plan for fewer than 30 homes per hectare will be enforced in the south east from December 2 according to a new direction from the ODPM.<p></p><p> But plans to implement the directive throughout the country are on hold while the government considers the situation. Prescott announced his intention to call in schemes below 30 per hectare in the summer as part of his comprehensive package of proposals to tackle the UK housing crisis. The government wants to see higher density development to make the best use of land and is steering developers away from detached properties and exclusive developments.</p><p> The directive requires local authorities in London and the south east to notify the regional Government Office if they are proposing to approve what the government calls &amp;“inefficient&amp;” schemes.</p><p> Housebuilders are concerned that the policy will see the &amp;“death of the garden&amp;” while HBF said a one-size fits-all solution would ensure failure and called for a mix of higher and lower densities as appropriate.
