Flying Finns finish first

<b><b>What would be quicker? Traditional cavity wall construction or the Jamera system from Finland? As Laing Partnership&amp;’s teams in north and east London discovered, there was no contest. Stephen Hoare reports</b></b><br><b>The cranes have gone and the scaffolding has come down at Laing Partnership&amp;’s site at Seabright Street, Stepney. The terrace of three two and three-storey houses is nearing completion and the builders look pleased. But the smiles reflect more than just satisfaction in a job well done. The team has just won a special challenge, a race against colleagues working on an almost identical housing association project in nearby Edmonton to see who could build houses in the fastest time. Seabright Street has won by more than a month.</b><br><b>The contest, which began on January 14, was designed to assess the performance and cost benefits of an innovative solid wall system from Finland and compare build time with traditional cavity wall construction. The terrace of a single two-storey and two three-storey houses at Seabright Street is the first full UK trial of the Jamera system, a single skin of close fitting Celcon Solar blocks.
