Govt consults on single construction regulator

The government is consulting on a single construction regulator to ensure standards across the sector in a recommendation from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report.

From today (December 17), the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) seeks views on a new regulator to help guide a well-functioning building system “which will support industry build the homes this country needs”, bringing better outcomes for residents and building users, “clarity and certainty for industry and investors and a fairer system that benefits those who prioritise safety and quality”.

In its first recommendation, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report stated that a “single construction regulator” should be established to reduce fragmentation and complexity in the way the built environment is regulated.

MHCLG said the consultation, closing on March 20, would inform final plans for a regulator, with a full response setting out detail on regulatory reform due to be published in summer 2026.

The government has also published its quarterly progress report on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. In February, it stated that it would take forward all 58 recommendations.
