<b><b>Calm down, calm down</b></b><br> Laing Homes&amp;’ publicity machine has hardly put a foot wrong for years. But questions may be asked about the timing shown by Laing spin queen Gail Corbett after the latest despatch to the hacks.<p></p><p> Scribblers were presented with a pocket-sized tome The Little Book of Calm, by Paul Wilson, suggesting that some Laing home buyers get a free copy of this unlikely bestseller in their &amp;“Welcome Pack&amp;”.</p><p> Paul Bennett, Laing Homes Northern Home Counties sales director, says of the book: &amp;“Escape is all about reaching your front door and leaving the stresses and strains of every day life outside.&amp;”</p><p> All very holistic and feelgood - except that my copy arrived on the morning City pages reported that Laing Homes top management wants &amp;£300 million from venture capitalists 3i to pursue an MBO. Would it not be more appropriate for copies of The Little Book of Calm to go instead to Laing&amp;’s top team? One page headed Barricade the Door advises: &amp;“There comes a time when you need to shut off interruption, to concentrate on your own needs and responsibilities. Do it for at least one hour a day.&amp;” I couldn&amp;’t have pitched the team talk better …
