The Health && Safety Executive has launched a discussion document aimed at stimulating debate on how the construction industry can improve its poor safety record. <p></p><p>Revitalising health and safety in construction builds on the work of last year&’s construction health and safety summit at which targets for reducing work related illnesses and deaths were set.</p><p> &“This is an opportunity for the construction industry to put forward ideas that can make a difference,&” said Heath && Safety Commission chair Bill Callaghan. &“There are no short cuts to the improvement of health and safety. Changing the culture is a long haul effort and it&’s up to everyone in the industry to play their part.&”</p><p> UCATT secretary George Brumwell backed the initiative: &“There is a realisation within the industry that its performance is not acceptable within our society. We can&’t be concerned about muggings on the street if we&’re not concerned about deaths on construction sites - both are equally criminal. </p><p> &“The answer isn&’t more legislation or even an army of inspectors.</p><p> &“The industry has to learn the lessons in this document because the problem is ours.
