HSE calls for safety brainstorming

The Health &amp;&amp; Safety Executive has launched a discussion document aimed at stimulating debate on how the construction industry can improve its poor safety record. <p></p><p>Revitalising health and safety in construction builds on the work of last year&amp;’s construction health and safety summit at which targets for reducing work related illnesses and deaths were set.</p><p> &amp;“This is an opportunity for the construction industry to put forward ideas that can make a difference,&amp;” said Heath &amp;&amp; Safety Commission chair Bill Callaghan. &amp;“There are no short cuts to the improvement of health and safety. Changing the culture is a long haul effort and it&amp;’s up to everyone in the industry to play their part.&amp;”</p><p> UCATT secretary George Brumwell backed the initiative: &amp;“There is a realisation within the industry that its performance is not acceptable within our society. We can&amp;’t be concerned about muggings on the street if we&amp;’re not concerned about deaths on construction sites - both are equally criminal. </p><p> &amp;“The answer isn&amp;’t more legislation or even an army of inspectors.</p><p> &amp;“The industry has to learn the lessons in this document because the problem is ours.
