Long and winding road

<b></b><p></p><p>Whenever we travel on the M42 motorway south of Birmingham I tell my kids &amp;“I built this motorway&amp;”. My four year old twin daughters are well impressed - I don&amp;’t trouble them with the detail that I was a junior quantity surveyor in a team numbering hundreds.</p><p> I guess this is what National Construction Week project director Paul Bower means when he asks: &amp;“Do you want to be able to say to your grandchildren &amp;‘I was part of the team that built the Stadium of Light in Sunderland or Cornwall&amp;’s Eden Project&amp;’?&amp;” click here to read</p><p> But what I don&amp;’t tell my kids is that I lived in a cold, damp caravan, worked long hours for little money with some pretty unsavoury characters and got out of the industry as soon as I could.</p><p> Okay, this was some time ago. But even though this edition of Housebuilder focuses on training and recruitment and the positive aspects of working in the industry, there are also reminders of how far we have yet to go to make construction, and, in our case, housebuilding, attractive to young people.
