New flood resistance guide

<b></b>A new guide advising developers, planners and home owners how to make their properties more flood-resistant has been launched.<br><i>Preparing for floods</i> presents best practice in local flood protection to buildings and explains the ways in which building materials and construction techniques can be used to limit flood damage.<p></p><p>The guide says that flood protection for new buildings or redevelopment schemes could require positioning floors or main living areas above expected water levels. It encourages the use of flood resistant materials and gives a clear preference to solid concrete floors.</p><p>Owners should have a flood management plan setting out the immediate steps to be taken - such as installing barriers - in case of a flood warning. The guide is published by DTLR, funded by, among others, the Environment Agency, the DTI, HBF and NHBC.</p><p><b>Copies are free on the Floodline 0845 988 1188 </b></p><p></p>
