<b>Praise for industry</b><p></p><p> Local government minister Nick Raynsford praised the improvements in design and customer care in the housebuilding industry over the past five years. Moving to quash fears that the proposed surge in development will see poor quality schemes, he said: &amp;“A lot of housebuilders now concentrate on brownfield development and have quality initiatives - they realise there is a bottom line implication.&amp;”</p><p><b>Tariffs stalled</b></p><p> The housing industry&amp;’s delight at the decision not to proceed with development tariffs may be short-lived. &amp;“The tariff plans are still there and will still be an important part of the planning process in the future,&amp;” said Prescott.</p><p><b>More to come</b></p><p> The plans and proposals announced by John Prescott &amp;“are just the start&amp;” of a programme to focus on building &amp;“sustainable communities which meet the needs of all&amp;”. The DPM said he will return to the House by the end of the year with &amp;“a comprehensive long term programme of action which will link policies on housing, planning, transport, education, health and regeneration&amp;”. </p><p><br> </p><p></p>
