<p>If current discussions about household microgeneration are anything to go by, wind turbines will soon be popping up on homes across the country. The Department of Trade and Industry has called for banks and energy providers to help consumers finance their own little hotbeds of microgeneration. It’s power to the people via solar panels and windfarms. “Everywhere you look these days, there are adverts for sofas, electric goods and kitchens offering interest-free credit or easy loans. But there are no such offers for microgeneration,” fretted climate change and environment minister Ian Pearson recently. </p> <p>He had no doubt been shopping in B&amp;Q, where wind turbines and solar panels are now on sale. For just £1,498 savvy consumers can pick up a Windsave turbine, which purports to deliver up to 1KW of energy to a household’s power circuit – “a 30% saving on the average energy bill.” A nifty three-pack of solar panels is available for the same price. There is clearly a concerted push underway by government and business to increase consumers’ environmental awareness. </p> <p>The requirement for energy performance certificates to be provided in home information packs from next June will further serve this aim.
