Prescott’s £60,000 house moves closer

The ODPM has announced a list of 33 organisations to go forward to the next stage of the Design for Manufacture Competition. The 33 are a mixture of individual companies, partnerships and consortia. The second stage of the competition will see them submitting firm proposals with a July deadline. Deputy prime minister John Prescott said: “Originally it was predicted that between 15-25 firms would move to this next stage, but since the quality of entries was so high that number has easily been surpassed.” Speaking at a National Housing Forum event, housing minister Yvette Cooper said the “high profile competition has raised the issue of design”. “Some of the entries are fantastic” whereas “others you wouldn’t want to live in,” she added. Cooper told housebuilder: “We see working with private developers as critical in increasing supply. Innovation has to come from private developers. We can’t do that in Whitehall.”
