Radical changes to home energy rules

The government is set to speed up changes to the Building Regulations to make homes more energy efficient under proposals published in the new Energy White Paper. Changes to rules on heating installations and thermal insulation, updated in 2002, are to be beefed up again in 2005.<p></p><p> The changes are expected to have a big impact on heating suppliers with all replacement and new boilers needing to have an energy efficiency rating of A or B. This, says the Energy Savings Trust, will see the end of non-condensing boilers.</p><p> Welcoming the proposals, Kelly Butler, head of supply chain partnerships at the EST, said: &amp;“The proposals present a huge challenge for the industry. It will mean that in the next two years manufacturers will need to switch to production of condensing boilers. The writing is on the wall for less efficient products.</p><p> &amp;“We have already seen a doubling of condensing boiler sales last year and these proposals will transform the market at a rate that has never been seen before.&amp;”</p><p> The proposals aim to cut 15 to 20 million tonnes of carbon (MtC) by 2020, with 4-6 MtC coming from energy efficiency.</p><p></p>
