<p>So innovation was alive and kicking in 2008, and winners of last year’s awards see it in rude health for 2009 despite the backdrop of gloom: “Innovation is immensely important,” states Andrew Sutton, associate at Gaunt Francis, architect on the award-winning Barratt Green House. “The demand for housing isn’t slowing; the demographics are still there.” Sutton adds that much needs to be done to attain higher levels of building performance, an issue that similarly will not die. “New ideas not only take the industry forward, but there is still a lot happening behind the scenes in terms of government expectation,” Redrow ceo Neil Fitzsimmons reminds the industry. “We still need to look at ways to improve our product, and it’s important to stakeholders that the industry makes progress.” Sharon Ledbetter points out that innovation is essential, albeit for the right reasons: “If it’s to improve the environment and help people then it’s vital. </p> <p>“But regardless of the times, the industry needs to be more creative.
